Richard Beattie

Richard I. Beattie is Senior Chairman of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, a position he has held since 2004. Mr. Beattie has been a partner of Simpson Thacher since 1977 and had served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of that firm from 1991 to 2004. Mr. Beattie specializes in counseling boards of directors and non-management directors on governance issues, investigations and litigation involving corporate officers and other crisis situations. He also specializes in mergers and acquisitions and leveraged buyouts. Mr. Beattie also has a distinguished record of public service, including serving as General Counsel of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare during President Carter’s administration and as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State for Reorganization Issues in 1997 during President Clinton’s administration. From 1995 to 1997, Mr. Beattie served as President Clinton’s Emissary for Cyprus.

Mr. Beattie is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Board of Overseers and Managers of Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center and the Board of Managers of Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases. Mr. Beattie is also a member of the board and founder of New Visions for Public Schools. Mr. Beattie joined Simpson Thacher in 1968 after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Prior to law school, he served four years in the Marine Corps as a jet pilot after graduating from Dartmouth College in 1961.
